Dermaplaning Regret: Things to Avoid - Healthline

Image
Peach fuzz, or as the pros know it, vellus hair, is the ultra-fine, downy hair that grows on your face. Vellus hair can become denser with age or as a result of conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome. For many people, peach fuzz can cause insecurity and low self-esteem. If you've ever done a quick Google search about quick fixes for female facial hair, you've probably come across the term "dermaplaning." Dermaplaning is an easy, quick process that involves shaving vellus hair on your face with a specially designed dermaplaning razor. If you dream of baby-smooth, hairless skin, this quick and noninvasive procedure may sound like a dream come true — however, dermaplaning isn't always as dreamy as it sounds. In fact, if it's performed on the wrong type of skin by an inexperienced hand, it can lead to some serious horror stories. Dermaplaning is a procedure in which a single razor blade is used to remove the top layer of skin. The procedure is quick, relatively

The Forgotten Drug of Abuse: How Junkies Grew Addicted to Talwin - The Atlantic

A history professor and researcher discovers old advertisements from the Sterling Drug Company in the Smithsonian's vast archives. The Sterling Drug Company papers are held at the Smithsonian's off-site facility, which turns out to be a great thing: you get to go right into the "stacks" because there's no public reading room, and that means walking by noncommissioned items from the Museum of Natural History -- it seemed like every time I went I noticed a new rhinoceros or whale peeking out from behind a tarpaulin. I felt a little guilty because one of the archivists had to commute out to the facility every day and work at a makeshift table next to me,

Kids need quality rest too, and, with more than 47,000 five-star reviews, parents are raving about these natural gummies. But is melatonin safe for children? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "melatonin can be a short-term way to help kids get rest while you keep trying to establish good bedtime routines."  The AAP encourages parents and pediatricians to make the decision to administer melatonin together — so if you have the green light from your doctor, the AAP recommends beginning with the lowest dosage: 0.5 mg or 1 mg, taken 30 to 90 minutes before bedtime. Since a single gummy contains 1 mg of melatonin, figuring out the right dose couldn't be easier.  "My son's pediatrician recommended this product in particular, as she uses it successfully with her own kids. We've been using it for a month now, and he literally asks to go to bed. Even if we skip a night, bedtime is much smoother as it's re-set the routine. Bedtime i

Series of OTC Therapies Safe, Effective for Chronic Constipation - Endocrinology Advisor

Image
There has been an increase in the number of over-the-counter (OTC) therapies for patients with chronic constipation, with improvements in the quality of evidence supporting their efficacy, according to study results published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. Some therapies such as polyethylene glycol and senna have good evidence for treatment of constipation, while the use of psyllium, fruits, and bisacodyl have moderate evidence. Chronic constipation is a common condition and nearly 40% of people with constipation self-treat with OTC laxatives; however, the efficacy and safety of these therapies is still not clear. To address this knowledge gap, a pair of investigators conducted an evidence-based systematic review of OTC therapies by reviewing data published throughout the last 15 years. They aimed to update the classification of therapies and to recommend treatments based on the strength and levels of supporting evidence. Of the 110 randomized cli
