Patients Sue Pharmacies for Refusing Hydroxychloroquine ... - Pharmacy Times

Issue of the Case When 2 patients who received a COVID-19 diagnosis presented prescriptions for ivermectin at 2 pharmacies, the pharmacists on duty declined to dispense them. Will the patients prevail when they file a lawsuit against the pharmacies, advancing 3 legal arguments to support their claims? Facts of the Case The husband of the couple was the first to receive a diagnosis of COVID-19. The couple first sought a source to obtain monoclonal antibodies for treatment in the state where they lived but were unsuccessful. They made the same attempt in a neighboring state without success. They had heard about use of ivermectin, an antiparasitic agent, to manage COVID-19 and investigated local prescribers who might authorize its use. Again, they were not successful. The couple then pursued a telehealth appointment with a physician in a state farther away who described herself "as an activist for medical freedom, patients' right to choose, and physicians' right to pr...

Colorado bill seeks to restrict access to weight loss supplements - NutraIngredients-usa.com

Sponsored by Senators Dominick Moreno and Lisa Cutter, SB23-176, Protections For People With An Eating Disorder , was introduced on March 3. The bill seeks to restrict the sale of dietary supplements for weight loss or over the counter diet pills to anyone under the age of 18. The bills follow similar efforts in states such as California, New York, and New Jersey over the past 12 months. The efforts in California and New York passed the State Legislatures but were ultimately vetoed by the respective governors. Similar bills have also recently been filed in Maryland calling for restricting access of minors to dietary supplements or pharmaceuticals for weight loss. The bill does not attempt to regulate muscle building supplements. Maryland House Bill 634 was cross-filed with Maryland Senate Bill 602. Commenting on the new bill in Colorado, Daniel Fabricant, PhD, President and CEO of the Natural Products Association, told us: "The state legislators are becoming emboldened to pro...

Roaccutane: The horror side effects and success stories of dermatology's ‘wonder drug’ - 9News

As far as medications go, there are few so polarising as the acne drug Roaccutane. The internet is littered with the blogs and vlogs of teenagers praising the drug as a life saver, a game changer that saved them from the hellish torment of cystic acne and finally offered up to them the miracle of clear skin. Then there are those who describe it as the "worst drug on Earth" after suffering from Roaccutane's rare but debilitating side effects, some of which can be tragically fatal. The list of side effects for Roaccutane, also known by its former name Accutane or by its generic name isotretinoin, is long. It includes depression, suicidal thoughts, mood alterations, birth defects for pregnant women, nose bleeds, gastrointestinal disorders, hair loss, dry skin and more. The drug has been linked to five deaths from suicide in the last five years in Australia, according to the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Last month, nine.com.au reported on the case of a Queensla...

Breakthrough: a first-in-class virtual simulator for dose optimization ... - Nature.com

Image
Abstract The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone-systems (RAAS) play a central role in the pathophysiology of congestive heart failure (CHF), justifying the use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) in dogs and humans with cardiac diseases. Seminal studies in canine CHF had suggested that the pharmacological action of benazepril was relatively independent of doses greater than 0.25 mg/kg P.O, thereby providing a rationale for the European labeled dose of benazepril in dogs with CHF. However, most of these earlier studies relied on measures of ACE activity, a sub-optimal endpoint to characterize the effect of ACEi on the RAAS. The objectives of this study were ( i ) to expand on previous mathematical modeling efforts of the dose-exposure–response relationship of benazepril on biomarkers of the RAAS which are relevant to CHF pathophysiology and disease prognosis; and ( ii ) to develop a software implementation capable of simulating clinical trials in benazepril in dogs be...
