After Rottweiler Attacks Girl, Tamil Nadu Bans 23 Dog Breeds
After a 5-year-old girl was brutally attacked by two rottweiler dogs in Chennai on May 5, the Tamil Nadu Animal husbandry department announced the ban on 23 dog breeds on Thursday, May 9. The department ordered the ban of these breeds by stating that they pose danger to people. Pet owners who have these dogs must sterilise them and ensure that they are domesticated, the department announced.
The 23 breeds include, Tosa Inu, Fila Brasileiro, American Bulldog, Kangal, Caucasian Shepherd, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Mastiffs, Terriers, Wolf Dogs, Akbash, Cane Corso, Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Boesboel, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Canario and Moscow. Importing or selling dogs belonging to these breeds has been prohibited, the state's Animal Husbandry department said.
Apart from sterlising the dogs, owners have been instructed to ensure that the dogs wear a protective mask and are leashed to good quality collars when in public places. The length of the link chain should be equal to the dog's body width (at least three times the length) from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, the rules read.
On May 5, a 5-year-old girl named Suraksha – the daughter of a security guard – was attacked by two rottweilers at the Greater Chennai Corporation park, located on the fourth lane in Nungambakkam. Suraksha sustained severe injuries to her head and has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai.

Mr. Moon is a 5-year-old, solid grey domestic shorthair cat that came in as a stray. He gets along well with the other kitties where he is housed.
You might think Mr. Moon has a bit of the grumpy cat face, but he is friendly and loves a good cheek massage. This boy is quiet, on the shy side and pretty easy going.
Capone is a black and white, 2-year-old American Staffordshire mix. Capone is on the shorter side, weighing 50 pounds.
He loves to play fetch with a ball. It is his favorite thing. Capone is house trained and is working on learning how to walk on a leash. He is excited to come out of the kennel and spend time with a human friend.
Dog adoptions require an application, online. A meet-and-greet with a dog also is mandatory. A cat room walk-through is available to test reaction. The dog adoption fee is $150 for medium and large dogs and $250 for puppies and small dogs, which includes vaccinations, microchip and sterilization.
Cat adoption fees are $60 for one cat, $80 for two, which includes applicable tests, vaccinations and spay/neutering.

Tamil Nadu Bans 23 'ferocious' Dog Breeds Including Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu
Tamil Nadu: At least 23 'ferocious' dog breeds including Pitbull terrier and Tosa Inu have been banned in Tamil Nadu, state's Animal Husbandry Department informed on Thursday.
The development comes following a recent incident in Chennai where a Rottweiler dog bit and injured a child. The state government has announced a ban on the import, breeding and sale of 23 breeds that are considered 'ferocious'.
Earlier in March, amid rising cases of dog bites in the country, the union government directed states to ban and breeding of several dog breeds including Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler among others. The Centre issued a list of 23 dog breeds and asked states to stop their breeding and sale.
Centre in a letter to all the states, UTs, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying asked them to sterilised the mentioned dog breeds.
The Government said it has received representations from citizens, citizen forums and Animal Welfare Organisations (AWOs) to ban some of the breeds of dogs from keeping them as pets and other purposes. The panel has identified 23 breeds of dogs, including mixed and cross breeds, as ferocious and also dangerous for human lives.
List of dog breeds that were banned by the CentrePitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog and Caucasian Shepherd Dog are among the breeds sought to be banned from the Centre.
Other breeds included South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf Dogs, Canario, Akbash Dog, Moscow Guard Dog, Cane Corso and Bandog.
"... The above dog breeds, including crossbreeds, shall be prohibited for import, breedings, selling as pet dogs and other purposes," the government letter said, quoting the recommendations of the expert panel.
The Centre has published the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animal (Dog Breeding and Marketing) rules, 2017 and the Prevent of Cruelty to Animal (pet shop) rules, 2018.
