Pasadena Police Dog Injured By Burglary Suspect On Christmas Day

A Pasadena police dog ended up with a 2-inch-long laceration on his snout on Christmas Day that required stitches after a burglary suspect refused to leave a 99 Cents Only Store in Pasadena and threw a metal object at him, police said.

Rex, a 2-year-old Dutch shepherd, is with his handler and recovering from his injury, Lt. Edgar Sanchez said.

The suspect, a 45-year-old Pasadena man, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and injuring a peace officer's animal.

At around noon on Monday, Dec. 25, a caller reported to police that someone had entered the store, at 1720 E. Colorado Blvd., the lieutenant said.

The suspect allegedly broke into the store by throwing a rock at a back door, shattering the glass, Sanchez said. The suspect refused to come out, so Rex headed to the store.

Officers and Rex entered about 1:30 p.M. And found the suspect in a large storage room and he refused to leave, Sanchez said.

Rex was deployed, and the suspect threw a metal object at Rex, Sanchez said. Rex didn't bite the suspect, he added.

As of Tuesday morning, the suspect was being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles.

How Many Dogs Need To Be Adopted At This Selma Shelter?

SELMA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – For the remaining days in December, the Second Chance Animal Center of Selma is trying to get the remaining dogs that are left in the shelter into loving homes.

Shelter officials told YourCentralValley.Com that there are 13 dogs left as of Dec. 25, 2023.

Officials at the shelter have been encouraging residents to adopt the remaining dogs before the December deadline and after the Selma City Council voted not to renew their contract for animal control services.

Officials say the remaining dogs will be handed over to Fresno Humane which is already over capacity.

Officials say that they were able to get 12 dogs adopted during the weekend and are hopeful that they can get the rest adopted in the next few days.

The Second Chance Animal Center will be open for the remaining days of December.

The Second Chance Animal Shelter of Selma is open seven days a week from 8 a.M. To 4:30 p.M., and they say their adoption fees are waived, but the adopter must pay for spay/neuter. They are located at 2831 W. Front St in Selma.
