Top 5 Kid-friendly Dogs: Kiersten Benitez, Owner Of Bark Orlando, Shares Her Top Picks For Family Dogs

Welcoming a new dog into the family can be a lot of fun.

But Kiersten Benitez with Bark Orlando said it's important to consider what kind of breed you adopt.

Benitez started Bark Orlando in 2016 as a dog training company and eventually expanded it to a full-service pet care company.

Every day she comes in contact with different breeds of dogs.

She shared her experience and advice for first-time dog owners with Ginger Gadsden and Matt Austin on Florida's Fourth Estate.

She said while training can make a big impact genetics do too.

Benitez's number one choice for first-time dog owners with young children is a Labrador Retriever.

"I've never met a lab that didn't just want to be in my lap," Benitez said

In addition to being friendly, she said they are also very amenable.

"They can adapt pretty well to a lot of change and that's good with a family and they have a pretty even temperament. Overall, they are actually pretty gentle dogs. They are super silly, and they are really easy to train," she said.

If you are looking for a smaller dog Benitez said a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a good choice.

"They are probably the most patient dogs I have ever met and also the happiest dog I have ever met," she said. "I have never seen a Cavalier walking down the street with a frown on its face. They always look happy. They are always wagging their tail. They want everyone to say hi to them. They're very gentle and they are always just content, and they love lots of attention. They don't need lots of exercise. If you are looking for a small dog and maybe you have a very busy lifestyle, this is a good dog."

Poodles are not just popular for breeding with other dogs, Benitez said they're also very good for families.

"They are actually one of the most intelligent breeds. They are super super easy to train," she said.

However, she pointed out grooming is time-consuming and expensive.

"Even though they have such a regal presence, they are super super goofy and playful," Benitez said.

Mutt Mutt (Mates)

Some people think it's risky to go to the pound and adopt a mutt, but Benitez said mutts can be a very good choice for first-time dog owners.

"Overall mutts take on a more even temperament. The pure breed dogs are bred for a job, the mutts are not," she said.

She also pointed out that they tend to live longer because they have more diverse genetics.

Benitez said a beagle can also make a great addition to your family.

"They are actually super intelligent," she said. "They are also extremely outgoing and very eager to please, so that makes training a lot easier. Overall, they are low maintenance, especially with grooming and adapting to new spaces and climates. They can really adapt to cold and hot."

She said the one drawback is their signature howl.

Even with the best-bred pets, there are still challenges people considering pet ownership need to watch out for.

Benitez shares more of those tips and the top dogs you may want to avoid if you have children under 10, including the lead in the popular children's show Bluey, a blue heeler, on Florida's Fourth Estate.

'I'm A Dog Groomer And There's 11 Breeds I'd Never Own - Including King Charles Cavalier'

With fierce debates currently raging surrounding XL bully dogs, some are furious that the breed has got a bad reputation due to a recent spate of attacks, blaming irresponsible owners, and others are adamant that the breed is naturally aggressive, and they're 'hard-wired for strength and violence'.

But now other breeds are also coming under fire as some experts admit that they'd never want to own them. Dog groomer 'Pawfection by Holly' said that she 'had her reasons' for not wanting to keep these breeds of pooches as pets. In the caption, she wrote: "Just my opinion I still love them all."

The video began with: "Dog breeds I wouldn't own as a dog breeder." The video then went through pictures of each breed. The breeds included in the video were "any doodle, chihuahua, pomeranian, husky, British bulldog, shitzu, French bulldog, westie, chow chow, shar pei, King Charles cavalier."

In the comments, some defended their favourite breeds, and other dog groomers wrote their opinions. One said: "As a fellow dog groomer I agree with this list 100% - plus American cockers." Holly joked: "I could've added so much more but the video would've been too long."

Another groomer chimed in, commenting: "I'm a groomer. It's funny my top two dogs I dislike grooming are doodle, and shitzu. Yet I have a rescued shitzu haha." Someone added: "I'm a dog groomer that just got a doodle pup", followed by a crying with laughter face. "I can't help it. They are adorable goofballs."

"All dogs are amazing", a dog-lover pointed out, whilst another said: "As a sister of a dog groomer - I got two cockapoos- she was not buzzed about it."

King Charles Prepares To Bring 'more Changes' To 'slimmed Down' Royal Family, Ex-butler Says

King Charles is looking to implement even "more changes" to the royal family as his mission of slimming down and modernizing the monarchy reaches new heights, his former royal butler has claimed.

Grant Harrold, who worked for the monarch for seven years when he was the Prince of Wales, claims that Charles will be putting his signature "twist" on traditions put in place by his later mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

"It's been interesting, he has copied Queen Elizabeth's footprint and done things the way she did them with all the official engagements," Harrold said.

"She stopped doing overseas visits a few years ago so Charles has been able to take that on quite easily but he has added his twist to it."

The King has made his desire for a slimmed-down monarchy known ever since assuming the throne last September — and he's also looking to make some changes to several aspects of his royal residences.

"There's lots of changes in the gardens, King Charles is famously a gardener and loves his gardens," Harrold said.

"I think there are changes coming, a prime example is the balcony at Trooping the Colour earlier this year," he explained. "If you look from the Queen's time it looked like Piccadilly Circus, if you look at it now it looks like something after Armageddon, it's completely different."

"He has very carefully and dignifiedly slimmed down the monarchy to what he classifies as the core family and that will only get smaller as sadly his royal cousins die off."

"They won't pick people to step in, I think it will become a slimmed down monarchy as he has always wanted," Harrold added, on behalf of Slingo.

Despite the King's desire to trim the fat of the monarchy, the sovereign's sister Princess Anne previously said she didn't think it was a good idea.

"I think 'slimmed-down' was said in a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a justifiable comment," she said back in May. "It doesn't sound like a good idea from where I'm standing… I'm not quite sure what else we can do."

Anne suggested that the royal family was already streamlined enough after Prince Harry, Meghan Markle stepped back as senior working members of the family.
