Axial Spondyloarthritis Flares: Causes, Signs, and Management - Verywell Health

Image
Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a disease of ups and downs. Some days, your back and joint symptoms are well-managed and you can go about your day with little or no discomfort. On other days, the swelling and pain are magnified, and you struggle to do simple tasks. A flare, or a flare-up, is when symptoms of axSpA increase, causing pain and discomfort, and might affect your ability to get around. Most researchers describe a flare-up as when your axSpA symptoms increase over a short period. The main symptoms of an axSpA flare-up include pain, fatigue, immobility, and emotional symptoms.   An axSpA flare can cause different symptoms as no two people experience the same symptoms. Triggers, which are factors that make your axSpA flare up, may not cause the same response in someone else. There has been plenty of research on flare symptoms on triggers. Triggers of axSpA flares include stress, overdoing activities, missing a medication dose, weather

Are you heading out to CVS on New Year's Eve but aren't sure if they're open? New Year's Eve can be a wild time, and with so much going on, you may have found yourself out of something you may need. Maybe it's getting drinks for a party, cleaning supplies to finally get that fruit cake stain out from Christmas, or maybe you just ran out of food and need to hit up the frozen food section. The drugstore chain has a lot of things and because many are open late, or are even 24 hours, they're an ideal spot to stop at if you didn't have a chance to get someplace else sooner. Especially on New Year's Eve, when so many other stores and restaurants close early. A lot of places observe adjusted hours on the holiday, so if you're running around and can't find a place that's open, CVS may be there for you. There are many places that will be open on New Year's Eve, and CVS will luckily be one of them. So if you're nowhere near a Target or grocery

Rural Pennsylvanians Stranded by Health Care Giants - The American Prospect

Image
In late November, at a strip mall in the rural Pennsylvania town of Bedford, Stephanie Over worked behind the Fisher's Pharmacy counter, filling prescriptions into translucent orange pill bottles and administering shots. As strip mall pharmacies go, Fisher's stands out. A recently restored art deco facade juts out, and the store's name runs down vertically in Broadway font. The store is a local fixture in Bedford, population under 3,000, and has been around for almost 100 years, of which Stephanie has worked nearly 30. Stephanie was about to check out for her lunch break when the letters flooded in. Regulars at Fisher's began marching up to the counter, clutching notices from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a leading health insurer in Western Pennsylvania, and Express Scripts, the pharmacy benefit manager for UPMC. The letter told them that under a new policy, UPMC's insurance plan would not cover prescriptions at Fisher's any

What Is Corticotrophin (ACTH)? - CreakyJoints

Image
Credit: Tatiana Ayazo Corticotrophin, also called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), is an FDA-approved treatment for numerous conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis (AS), gout, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). What's more, it's been on the market since the 1950s. So why haven't you heard of it? The answer is complicated, but it largely boils down to cost and access. ACTH is more expensive than a simple steroid treatment, and it's obtained from a specialty pharmacy — a trustworthy resource that can help patients navigate health insurance, side effects, dosing and administration, and home delivery of the drug. ACTH is used in lieu of corticosteroids (like prednisone or prednisolone) to control rheumatic and autoimmune disease flares; and like corticosteroids, it doesn't slow the progression of the disease. This is the job of the biologic or biosimilar. ACTH is typically reserv

Share on Pinterest An animal study found that high doses of cholesterol-lowering statins may negatively impact bone health. MediaNews Group/Reading Eagle via Getty Images A new study examined the effects that higher doses of statins, drugs that can lower cholesterol, have on the body in terms of bone health. The researchers used mice in the study who were fed on a high fat diet and obese, and the female mice had their ovaries removed to simulate adults who take statins. Half the mice were given high dose of simvastatin for 5.5 months . The results of this study on mice showed that high doses of statins might weaken the microstructure of bones. A linked cohort study in humans showed that the subgroup of people on high dose simvastatin had an increased risk of osteoporosis. In addition, the cohort, irrespective of dose, had a reduced risk of osteoporosis in men and a small increase in women. After a paper published in 2019 raised concerns about high doses of statins and osteoporosis in

Persistent Testosterone Suppression After Cessation of Androgen ... - Cureus

Image
Introduction Many men receiving temporary androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for localized prostate cancer fail to achieve baseline testosterone levels after cessation. Testosterone recovery in men with localized prostate cancer receiving temporary ADT was assessed. Methods A global federated health research network (TriNetX) was used to identify men diagnosed with prostate cancer undergoing temporary ADT. Two cohorts were identified: men receiving luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) antagonists or LHRH agonists, and men receiving combined ADT (LHRH agonist and antiandrogens). Further stratification was based on a treatment duration of six months (short-term) or 18 months (long-term) to compare testosterone (T) recovery profiles five years after ADT cessation. Results A total of 28,583 men received LHRH agonist or antagonist therapy alone, and 20,188 men received combination ADT. A total of 46.7% of men who received short-term LHRH agonists or antagonists

Teens and young adults who are treated for sleep issues with benzodiazepines, a class of medication sometimes prescribed to treat anxiety and insomnia, may be at a higher risk of overdose, according to a new study, published November 22 in JAMA Network Open . Benzodiazepines, or "benzos," are a class of medication commonly prescribed to treat conditions such as anxiety and insomnia, and includes drugs such as Xanax, Ativan, Valium and Klonopin. "The risk of drug overdose with benzodiazepine treatment is an important safety consideration when treating adolescents and young adults," said a coauthor of the study, Greta Bushnell, PhD, a researcher and faculty member at Rutgers School of Public Health in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in a press release. "We hope these results can inform prescribing decisions and encourage close monitoring in this young patient population." The Number of Overdose Deaths Involving Benzodiazepine Continues to Climb

Francesca Morgan lost her job after she was caught stealing just two tablets (Picture: Cavendish Press) An NHS nurse has been sacked for stealing two tablets from the hospital where she worked to treat her headache. Francesca Morgan, 32, took a co-codamol and a paracetamol pill 'without legitimate reason' from the drugstore at Arrowe Park Hospital near Liverpool. Health officials noticed prescription medication had gone missing and installed a secret camera which filmed her helping herself to the drugs. Morgan, of Woolton, in Liverpool, pleaded guilty at Wirral magistrates' court to two thefts between June 6 and June 18 last year. Yvonne Dobson, prosecuting, said: ' The hospital began an investigation due to a large number of pills needing replenishment. A tablet count was put in place to monitor the amount of medication at the beginning and end of each day. 'That was put in place without the knowledge of the staff. 'Following this a covert
