The Elgin Police Department will host a Halloween Extravaganza from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, the police department in downtown Elgin.
The free public event will feature music, entertainment, crafts, games and a costume contest for children ages 12 and under.

Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain and Nate Lanthrum from Lighthouse Recovery will hold a program on jail justice reforms from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Aurora Police Department, 1200 E. Indian Trail Road.
The presentation will provide information on the philosophy behind programs offered at the Kane County jail, including how they work and are funded. Two former jail inmates who participated in the programs will take part in the discussion, a news release said.

Elgin Township will hold a vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 17, on the lower level of its building at 729 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin.
Flu, COVID-19 shots and COVID-19 boosters will be available for free with most insurance plans. Pneumonia shots will be available and are covered for those with Medicare. Tetanus and shingles shots will be available, but typically have an insurance co-payment.
Required paperwork will be available onsite. Shots will be given by Osco pharmacy staff. Anyone getting a vaccination receives a 10% discount coupon from Jewel-Osco.

A mobile food pantry and diaper distribution event be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the parking lot of the former Sherman Hospital, 901 Center St., Elgin.

The event was organized by St. Paul's United Church of Christ, the Northern Illinois Food Bank and groups that provide resources to people in need.

Elgin Community College will present "Political Pawns: Global Migration and the Case of Migrant Busing," a virtual program that's open and free to the public at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, via Zoom.
Panelists will be ECC's Vincent Gaddis, professor of history; Mia Hardy, assistant professor of sociology; and Laura Haske, associate professor of paralegal. They will examine the sociological, historical and legal ramifications of the global migration crisis and the human rights issues associated with sending migrants to northern cities.
The program is part of the Bill Pelz Global Speaker Series. It's sponsored by the ECC Global/International Studies Taskforce.

A Kane County Forest Preserve District is holding a fall hike Oct. 30 during which a naturalist will discuss native tree species and the changes they undergo in the fall and how animals prepare for cold weather.
The free, all-ages event is set for 9:30 to 11 a.m. at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St. in St. Charles.
