Aspirin vs. ibuprofen: Key differences and which to take - Insider

Image
Aspirin and ibuprofen contain different active ingredients — whereas aspirin is made with salicylic acid, ibuprofen is made with propionic acid.  However, both aspirin and ibuprofen can be used to treat pain caused by inflammation or injury, headaches, fevers, arthritis, and menstrual cramps. People at risk of cardiovascular disease may want to avoid ibuprofen, as it may increase your risk of heart troubles.  This article was medically reviewed by Jason R. McKnight, MD, MS, a family medicine physician and clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M College of Medicine.  If you've taken an over-the-counter pain reliever before, you've likely had aspirin or ibuprofen. These are both very common nonsteroidal anti-inflamm...

Binimetinib/Erlotinib Shows Tolerability in EGFR- or KRAS-Mutated NSCLC - Targeted Oncology

Image
Andreas Saltos, MD, medical oncologist and clinical research medical director in the department of thoracic oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center, discusses a phase 1 trial (NCT01859026) of binimetinib (Mektovi) and erlotinib (Tarceva) for patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and EGFR or KRAS mutations. The study investigators were looking at whether the combination of binimetinib and erlotinib showed safety and efficacy for patients with NSCLC. Erlotinib is an EGFR inhibitor used as targeted therapy for NSCLC, while the MEK inhibitor binimetinib is not currently approved for NSCLC. Saltos says that investigators theorized that dual inhibition of the MAP kinase pathway would have efficacy in patients with EGFR mutations as well as KRAS mutations, which have limited targeted therapies available. Of a total of 43 patients enrolled in the phase 1 or 1b parts of the trial, 17 (40%) had an EGFR mutation, while 22 (51%) had a KRAS mutation. According to Saltos, investigators ...

10 Medication Types That May Cause Tinnitus - Healthline

Image
A wide range of prescription and over-the-counter medications are potentially "ototoxic," or harmful to the ears. Ototoxic medications can potentially cause tinnitus by damaging the sensory cells located within the inner ear. These cells are needed for balance and hearing. Symptoms of tinnitus may resolve once the medication is stopped, or the dosage is changed. However, in some instances, tinnitus caused by ototoxic drugs may be long lasting or permanent. Not everyone who takes an ototoxic medication will develop tinnitus. Risk factors, such as exposure to loud noise while taking the medication, may increase your risk. In this article, we'll go over some common types of ototoxic medications as well as what you can do to avoid tinnitus. Analgesics are pain medications. They're available as over-the-counter medications and by prescription. Your doctor may prescribe an analgesic for you to reduce pain caused by arthritis, tendinitis, and other conditions. ‘Who killed Jane Stanford?’ New book reveals university founder’s killer - New York Post

Image
Jane Stanford's death was one of the most sensational of the 20th century — and now, more than 100 years later, a new book offers enough proof to call it murder. Stanford, beloved by her community, survived the deaths of her husband and son while keeping her family's namesake university afloat with her own money. She seemed like the unlikeliest of murder victims when she died in Hawaii, spasming and vomiting, poisoned by strychnine. Who would want to kill a generous old lady? Plenty of people, according to a new book by veteran historian Richard White. There are so many possible suspects in "Who Killed Jane Stanford?" (W.W. Norton) that the book reads like a game of "Clue" — among them, a disgruntled university president, an overworked personal assistant, a recently fired "manservant" and a handful of aggrieved housekeepers.   So, who killed the rich old lady in the Honolulu hote...
